Exciting Parliamentary Happenings

Immediately following this post will be my Scotland coverage.

I’ve spent Monday and Tuesday engaged in fairly entertaining work. The UK Veteran’s Day is Wednesday, and we’re putting on a special event for school children and veterans in Tooting on Thursday. So I spent the days creating a brief for Sadiq to base his speech off of, a much simpler brief with pictures for all of the elementary school children, and then a series of fun worksheets and activities for them to do. Along with random office errands, that constituted my days.

Tony Blair hands over the reigns to Gordon Brown tomorrow! Yesterday he ripped David Cameron to shreds on the EU, which was amazing to watch. Question Time is, as many people call it, “politics as theatre”, so when those two actually start attacking on real policy politics, it’s even more fascinating. I’m excited to see how Brown will do. A Tory defected to Labour today…I stood right in front of the new Deputy PM getting lunch…gosh I love Parliament.

Oh, also, as an embarrassing moment…I keep passing the pictured statue every day as I walk through Norman Shaw South. (That’s the actual building I work in, it’s been added to the Parliamentary complex, it used to be the headquarters for the Scotland Yard). After several days of not knowing who it was, I spent some day searching all over it for a name, but there’s not even the tiniest of brass placards. Frustrated, I finally asked Leah from my office.

Leah: “That’s John Major.”
Me: But he’s not named!!
Leah: I'm pretty sure they assume that everyone working in this building will know who he is.
Me: Well, I know who he is! (I’ve answered quiz bowl questions on him after all). But that doesn’t mean I had any idea what he looked like!

Leah laughed at me.

As two random notes...

I’ve decided it’s way too easy to buy music off of itunes. I’m in love with it. Kristi got me addicted to Michael Buble, so I just clicked “buy” on about $30 worth of music. The first new song of his that came up? “A Foggy Day in London Town” It’s amazing!! It fits my mood for the weather so perfectly.

For all of those of you who know my sister Gail, or even if you don’t, you should read her blog! She’s copying my idea of writing while in a foreign country – she’s currently in Germany – and she’s much more of an inherently hysterical writer than I am. Even if you don’t read the entire thing, at least read this post. It’s about shamefully using men for their conversational skills. http://burgunbesiegt.blogspot.com/2007/06/sie-haben-shne-augen.html

Carolyn! Thanks for the publicity! I shall return the favor! Not that it will increase your traffic, since my readership is modestly confined only to the family at present.

I appreciate your endorsement and also your comments on my blog. (And here I was afraid my blog was too verbose, compared to your admirably concise, crisp prose.)

Sorry I haven't posted on your blog for a while. I've been quite busy but I am now trying to catch up!

I have posted retroactive comments on some of your earlier postings.

Above all, I miss our daily cricklers!
